Breaking Bad- (Week Three) Breaking the Rules

Progress Check:

Week One: Breaking the Silence- We resolve to be completely honest with God and ourselves. (This is our communication with Him.)

Week Two:  Breaking the Code- We resolve to be open to how God chooses to reveal Himself, to not attempt to box Him in, and to use scripture and council to check our communication with Him.  (This is His communication with us.)

Week Three: Breaking the Rules

Ok.  Let’s talk.

Part of REAL relationship is spending time together.  Not distracted time.  Not obligatory time.

Engaged time.

Attentive time.

Real time.

When we say something is happening in “real time”, we mean that it is happening in the moment…live…as we speak.  I want us to consider an alternate definition of “real time” for our purposes this week.  Let’s call engaged, attentive time: REAL time.  You KNOW the difference between someone who appears to be paying attention to you and someone who is genuinely interested in you and what you are saying.

God knows too.

The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.”–   Isaiah 29:13

This week will be focused on spending time– REAL time– with God.  Not structured by rules we’ve been taught somewhere.  We are going to do life with God.

REAL time in real time.

Let’s keep two things in mind.

  1.  Spending time in scripture, in a devo, in prayer, listening to a sermon…however you spend your quiet time…we are going to stop looking at this like it’s supposed to meet some sort of checklist or that if we aren’t dong this time a certain way, we are doing it wrong.  We are going to, instead, look at it as we do a meal.  We don’t critique ourselves about how we chew and swallow.  We just put good food in so energy can come out.  Well, we are going to look at devotion time this week as putting good food in.  We aren’t going to stress about whether it looks the same every day; how much time we spent in prayer; or really how much anything.  We are going to see it as a spiritual meal.  We are just putting good food in.

  2. We are going to reframe how we think about relating to God by doing life with God…either in new ways…or possibly resurrecting old ways that used to be part of your life.  The activities you take part in this week, by intentionally doing life with God, will be unique to your gifting and passions.  Hopefully you will try some new ways of doing life with God as well.  Whatever the case, the goal is to be real and spend real time together.

Journal or pray about this scripture and the following questions:

The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.”–   Isaiah 29:13

What thoughts does it bring to mind?  What emotions does it trigger?  Do frustrations surface?  What new experiences would you like to have become a part of your daily relationship with God?
